What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a laser to permanently eliminate unwanted hair. The specialized laser targets melanin in the hair. As the laser fires, it rapidly and efficiently heats the hair follicle. For hairs that are in the active phase of growth, the laser destroys the hair’s ability to re-grow.

Why is the Hair’s Phase of Growth Important?

A hair in the active growth or “Anagen” phase of growth has unique properties. These physical characteristics make the hair follicle extremely vulnerable to the laser. All hair containing melanin will absorb the laser beam, but only those in the active phase of growth are susceptible to being permanently destroyed.

Does Laser Hair Removal Really Work?

Ok. But does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

Laser hair removal does usually sting a little. The hand-piece of the Lumenis LightSheer has been designed with the patented Sapphire ChillTip, which keeps the skin cold. Again, the laser works by heating the melanin in the hair. Depending on how much melanin is present in the hair and the surrounding skin, you may experience a slight to moderate stinging sensation.

How long does it take?

It depends on the area. A small area on the face will take just a few minutes, a modest bikini can be done on your lunch break, and a full leg treatment will take about an hour.

How Many Treatments will I need?

Usually four to six treatments, each spaced six weeks apart. Remember, only hair in the active (or Anagen)) phase of growth will be permanently destroyed by the laser. Many people will be happy after only three treatments, while others will be so excited by their results that they want to go for an even sleeker and more bare look. It’s up to you. The number of treatments you will need to achieve your desired result will depend in large part on your skin type (or color) and the density and color of your hair follicles.

What if I have dark skin?
