Hair Growth Phases
Hair growth occurs in phases and the laser is effective only on hairs that are in their growth phase. Not all hair follicles are in the growth phase at the same time. At any given time, about 20% of your hair follicles are in their growth phase, leaving 80% that are not. The phases last for about 6 weeks.
Since the laser can damage the hairs only while they are in the growth phase, they are are able to permanently eliminate about 20% of the hair follicles in the treatment area. This means that if you complete one treatment, you should see a permanent reduction of 20% in that area. And since the phases last for about 6 weeks, treatments are spaced out at least 6 weeks apart to allow for another set of your hairs to move into the growth phase.
Each person is different and will have different results. On average, our clients will need at least 6 to 12 treatments spaced 6 weeks apart to achieve optimal results.
What to Expect at Your Laser Treatment
Before you arrive for your treatmen, we ask that you shave the area to remove unwanted hair. The closer the shave, the more comfortable and effective your treatment will be. The time of the treatment depends on the size of the body area. Larger areas will take longer and smaller areas will take less time.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
Unwanted hair can be permanently removed with laser hair removal. The skin is unaffected by the treatment’s lasers, which kill the unwanted hair follicles. There is no downtime associated with the procedure, and it can be completed quickly.
In-grown hairs can result from other hair removal methods, but laser hair removal prevents them from developing. Plus, the treatment’s aftercare is usually straightforward as avoiding sun exposure and skin irritation for a few weeks following your session. Finally, the treatment only causes mild discomfort.
Laser Hair Removal Side Effects
Usually, the area where the laser is being applied will sting or snap during the actual treatment. These discomforting feelings are all fleeting, lasting only a few milliseconds each. Your skin will turn pink or even reddish, feel sensitive to the touch, and you’ll probably notice swelling, or perifollicular edema, at the base of each hair. This can last for up to a day or two, but it usually goes away within two hours.
The treated hairs will eventually break off and be shed by your skin after becoming burnt, ashen, or gummy in texture. You will notice the hairs as they work their way out just below the skin’s surface. Some have called its appearance during this phase “peppery,” describing it as though the skin were flecked with tiny black pepper flakes. This is normal and will go away in a few days, though in some cases it can take up to a few weeks. Some people find this bothersome and attempt to remove the hair with a loofah or scrub, but it’s best to leave it alone. This material will naturally be expelled from your body.
How Laser Hair Removal Works
The lasers employed at Bella Medspa use a concentrated wavelength technology that reaches hair follicles at the roots. This targets and damages the individual hair follicles. Once damaged, these hairs cannot grow back again. This occurs when the laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft in the follicle. By selectively targeting the melanin, the laser can damage the follicle without damaging the skin. The end result is permanent removal of unwanted hair.

Regardless of skin tone, laser hair removal is generally safe for all people. Nevertheless, the procedure shouldn’t be performed on people whose skin has recently been tanned or who have open infections.
