About Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal permanently removes hair using a specific light wave that is engineered to target hair follicles. Our laser technology essentially burns hair follicles that are in the growth phase. At any given time about 15% of a person’s hair follicles are in the hair growth phase. This is why multiple treatments to achieve optimal hair removal is necessary. Six weeks between treatments is needed to allow the patient to recover and avoid burns. The six week interval also allows hair follicles that have not been killed to move into a growth phase so that they can be treated by the laser. The pigment in the hair follicle absorbs the laser’s energy light beam that passes through the patient’s skin. Laser Hair Removal Treatment works by selectively destroying hair follicles, resulting in significant unwanted body hair reduction in the treated areas.
Everyone reacts differently to the laser. Most people need 6 to 12 treatment sessions to achieve optimal results.
The lasers employed for treatment use a concentrated wavelength technology reaches hair follicles at the roots. This targets and damages the individual hair follicles. Once damaged it cannot grow back again. The results of treatment are permanent. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft in the follicle. The laser works because it selectively targets melanin found in the hair. By selectively targeting melanin the laser can damage the follicle without damaging the skin. The end result is permanent removal of unwanted hair.
Hair Growth Phases
Understanding hair growth phases is important because the laser is effective only on hair that are in their growth phase. At any given time about 20% of hair follicles are in their growth phase and 80% are not. This is why for any given treatment lasers are able to permanently eliminate about 20% of the hair follicles in the treatment area with each treatment session. This means that if you complete one treatment, you should see a permanent reduction of 20%.
Each client will see different results, but the average number of treatments needed is around 6 – 12 to achieve optimal hair reduction.
What to Expect at Your Laser Treatment
Before you arrive for your treatment we ask that you shave the area to remove unwanted hair. The closer the shave the more comfortable and effective your treatment will be. When you arrive you will be asked to fill out paper work if you are a new client before treatment. Your esthetician will make sure that you are comfortable and assure that you have no pain during your treatment.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is a permanent way to get rid of unwanted hair in various treatment areas. Providers have worked for decades to hone their laser hair removal methods, which has enabled them to produce reliable outcomes.
Contemporary lasers destroy hair follicles without damaging the skin. There is no downtime, and the process is quicker than with other hair removal procedures. Large areas like the arms or back can be treated in as little as an hour.
By breaking down hair and destroying the follicle, laser hair removal prevents ingrown hairs, which can be painful. Many compare the feeling of the laser to a slight sting or the snap of a rubber band. Aftercare usually consists of avoiding sun exposure and skin irritation at the treated site(s) for a few weeks.
Who Should Do Laser Hair Removal and Who Shouldn’t?
Regardless of their skin tone, most people are can safely undergo laser hair removal. However, those with light skin and dark hair typically achieve the best results from the procedure.
You should avoid the procedure if you recently tanned your skin or if you have any active infections. The best way to evaluate your candidacy is to schedule a consultation with an experienced laser hair removal provider like Bella Medspa. They will be able to assess your hair and forecast its response to the treatment.
Laser Hair Removal vs. Waxing
When you remove hair by waxing, hair grows back to replace the hair that was removed. You must also wait until the hair is long enough to adhere to the wax before scheduling follow-up sessions in order to maintain your desired results.
On the contrary, laser hair removal is a long-term fix. Although several sessions are typically needed, the outcomes last far longer than with waxing. In one study, nearly 88% of laser hair removal patients were still experiencing results 11.5 years after their treatment.
Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis
Electrolysis uses short-wave radio frequency to destroy hair follicles and stop hair growth. Small needles are used by the device to pierce the skin and destroy the follicles. Because of this method, electrolysis carries a higher risk of infection than laser hair removal.
In contrast to electrolysis, laser hair removal can be applied to larger areas, enabling you to remove more hair in fewer sessions. One study comparing the two techniques found that laser hair removal is both less painful and 60 times faster than electrolysis.

Laser Hair Removal FAQ
Is laser hair removal worth it?
Each person reacts differently to laser hair removal. Everyone gets a different amount of utility out of not having to shave. So, the answer to this question really depends on the person. Some people find laser hair removal to be worth the cost and inconvenience, while others do not. There are a lot of factors that go into whether or not laser hair removal is worth it, such as the amount of hair that needs to be removed, the location of the hair, and the patient’s budget.
Is laser hair removal painful?
Laser hair removal isn’t necessarily painful for everyone. Some people report feeling a slight tingling sensation, but most say it’s not uncomfortable. The level of pain you experience will depend on your pain tolerance, but in general laser hair removal does not involve severe discomfort.
How many sessions of laser hair removal will I need?
For most people each laser hair removal session will destroy about 20% of the hair follicle in the treated area. But everyone reacts differently to treatment. At Bella Medspa we advise that most people will need 6 to 12 treatments to achieve maximum, permanent hair reduction.
How long does laser hair removal last?
Laser hair removal is a long-term solution for hair removal. When a hair follicle is damaged by laser hair removal the hair does not return. The hair that is removed will remain removed permanently. Hormonal changes can cause hair follicles that were dormant and hair growth from those follicles may occur. In that case, a touch up may be required for maximum result.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
The short answer is yes–laser hair removal is typically a permanent solution for getting rid of unwanted hair. However, there are some cases where it may not be completely successful, in which case you’d need additional treatment sessions. This is why it’s crucial that you seek out this treatment from an experienced provider like Bella Medspa.
When can you shave after laser hair removal?
Shaving is typically not recommended for at least 48 hours after laser hair removal. This is to allow the hair follicles to heal and prevent irritation. Tweezing is not recommended after laser hair removal. This can cause irritation and may even remove the treated hair follicles. If you must tweeze, it is best to wait at least 48 hours after your treatment before doing so.
