How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a laser to permanently eliminate unwanted hair. The specialized laser targets melanin in the hair.

As the laser fires, it rapidly and efficiently heats the hair follicle. For hairs that are in the active phase of growth, the laser destroys the hair’s ability to re-grow.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

Laser hair removal is priced by the body area being treated. Bella Medspa published our prices on our website. See our laser hair removal cost for each body area.

Why is the Hair Growth Cycle Important?

A hair in the active growth or “Anagen” phase of growth has unique properties. These physical characteristics make the hair follicle extremely vulnerable to the laser. All hair containing melanin will absorb the laser beam, but only those in the active phase of growth are susceptible to being permanently destroyed. To understand exactly how laser hair removal works and why more than one treatment session is needed, it is important to know the three growth cycles of hair:

Anagen Phase- Also known as the growth phase, this stage of hair growth typically takes 3-5 years and determines hair length.

Catagen Phase- During this transitional phase, which lasts approximately 10 days or so, the hair follicle begins to shrink and hair prepares to shed.

Telogen Phase- The resting phase is the final stage of hair growth, lasting anywhere between 2-4 months and characterized by gradual hair shedding.

Remember, laser hair removal only works on hair duing the active growth phase. This means patients usually need to undergo multpile hair removal treatment sessions, spaced 5-8 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results.

Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Yes. Lasers are used for many different procedures, including surgery. Bella Medspa uses the Lumenis LightSheer Diode laser for treatment. This laser is approved by the FDA. Our lasers safely and effectively remove unwanted hair by concentrating a beam of light at a hair follicle that is in an active growth mode. The laser light is absorbed by the skin’s pigment, which damages the hair follicle to prevent or diminish future growth. The heat from our lasers destroys the hair follicle without damaging the skin. In clinical studies, the LightSheer has been proven, again and again, to significantly permanently remove unwanted hair.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Our Laser Hair Removal system is very comfortable, especially when compared to other Laser Hair Removal Technology out there. Laser hair removal does usually sting a little. Many of our patients compare the feeling to a quick snapping sensation. Most patients have minimal discomfort during the treatment and immediately return to their daily activities. The hand-piece of the Lumenis LightSheer has been designed with the patented Sapphire ChillTip, which keeps the skin cold. Again, the laser works by heating the melanin in the hair. Depending on how much melanin is present in the hair and the surrounding skin, you may experience a slight to moderate stinging sensation. At Bella Medspa, we’re committed to patient comfort.

How long does Laser Hair Removal Last?

Laser Hair Removal is one of the most widely done cosmetic procedures in the U.S. because of its effectiveness in eliminating unwanted hairs. This non-invasive treatment uses highly concentrated light to destroy hair follicles on nearly any part of the body. If you’re looking to eliminate unwanted hair for good, a laser hair removal treatment has many benefits, including smoother & softer skin. Because our laser hair removal machines uses concentrated light, the laser can easily target dark, coarse hairs while not damaging the surrounding skin. Our specialized lasers used for this popular treatment only take fractions of a second to treat multiple hairs at once. This means removing unwanted hair from your upper lip may only take a couple of minutes and a larger area, such as the back or legs, can be treated in about one hour. Laser hair removal provides permanent hair loss for most patients within six to twelve treatments. Once patients achieve permanent hair loss, they typically only need touch-up treatments once or twice every three to five years. Keep in mind that hormones, certain medications, and hair growing supplements can affect hair growth levels throughout life.

How Many Treatments will I need?

Usually 6 to 12 treatments is the average, each spaced six weeks apart. Remember, only hair in the active (or Anagen)) phase of growth will be permanently destroyed by the laser. Many people will be happy after only three treatments, while others will be so excited by their results that they want to go for an even sleeker and more bare look. It’s up to you. The number of treatments you will need to achieve your desired result will depend in large part on your skin type (or color) and the density and color of your hair follicles.

Why Skin Tone Matters For Laser Hair Removal Results?

Darker skin will absolutely require a more gently approach, however the Lumenis LightSheer is FDA approved to treat all skin types. The Lumenis LightSheer used at Bella Medspa can be used safely on a variety of skin types. It is important to note that our staff may perform a test spot prior to the first treatment to ensure that laser settings are compatible with a patient’s skin type and a proper response to laser hair removal. In darker skin types, lower energy settings and more treatments are often necessary as safety comes first. When skin color is closer to the color of the hair to be removed by the laser, lower laser settings are required to treat hair but preserve the safety of the skin and avoid unwanted side effects.
