Blotchy, uneven skin tone can wreak havoc on one’s self-image. This all too common skin condition is typically brought on by a hormonal or physical reaction to sunlight. The primary culprit is melanin.

Under normal, healthy circumstances melanin serves to naturally protect our skin from ultraviolet rays. Unfortunately, melanin can build up in inconsistent and uneven quantities, causing brown patches.

As these cells containing more melanin come in contact with sunlight, they continue to darken faster than other areas with less melanin, causing the uneven coloration.

Hormones play a significant role in skin tone. Uneven patches can be due to hormonal changes, especially during adolescence and pregnancy or in certain women taking birth control pills. The extra estrogen in the body causes overproduction of melanin, resulting in uneven skin tone.

Sebum production is also heavily influenced by hormone levels and, as a result, can significantly contribute to skin’s discoloration. Sebum is an oily secretion produced by sebaceous glands.

The main role of sebum is to waterproof the skin and hair. In excess, sebum causes oily and congested skin. As sebum and dead skin cells bind, they create clogged pores and an irritated surface.

On the other hand, too little sebum means that cells don’t bind well to each other, resulting in uneven patches that feel rough to the touch and often look like cracked skin. Fortunately, uneven skin tone caused by sebum production is simple to remedy.
