Rosacea Treatment

Rosacea Treatment

For rosacea sufferers, treatment options can seem dim. This common skin disease causes red skin and bumps that can damage a person’s self-esteem along with causing physical pain. While it isn’t understood what precisely causes rosacea, treatment options are aimed at reducing the inflammation it causes. Typically, this is done with over-the-counter antibiotics, either topical or oral.

However, in recent years, IPL rosacea treatment has been making some headway in the medical field as an alternative to conventional therapies. The procedure uses targeted wavelengths of light to change the overall appearance of the skin and is performed on an outpatient basis.

Proven effective since the ’90s, IPL treatment, or intense pulsed light, treats signs of rosacea like persistent redness caused from dilated blood vessels or thickened skin. The efficacy of IPL treatment is remarkable, and this treatment option is approved by the FDA. Patients typically report significantly decreased redness after just one treatment.

While the procedure is relatively simple, patients should look for dermatologists who are well-versed in this kind of therapy. It’s also important to note that IPL treatment is not a cure for rosacea but can diminish its appearance for a lengthy period of time. Patients should still continue to visit their dermatologists to avoid flare-ups.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin disease that is characterized by redness of the skin. Over time, the skin may thicken, or the patient may have acne-like breakouts. Rosacea may also affect the eyes.

This disease cannot be cured, and it is often affected by triggers like weather or specific foods. Treatment is aimed at reducing the inflammation characteristic of the disease, and many patients enjoy years between flare-ups when under a dermatologist’s care.

What Causes Rosacea?

Rosacea is thought to be a genetic condition with certain groups more predisposed to it. The majority of sufferers are Caucasian, female and over the age of 30. Individual triggers vary, but most are related to the weather and the person’s diet. It’s especially important for those with rosacea to protect their skin from the elements and to keep track of the foods they eat so as to avoid future episodes.
